Image portrays a 3D display providing an orientation view for
corresponding images with MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) and CALIPSO (Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation) satellites.
Night time observations of attenuated backscatter at 532 nm overlayed
combined MODIS Aqua and Terra observations. Vertical profiles
extend to 20 km. Aerosol features are highlighted in colors
ranging from cyan through red. Clouds are highlighted by shades
of gray.
Interesting features:
Aerosol plume over India corresponds with MODIS observations (note slightly different color bars between satellite data sets).
Aerosol pool near Himalayas
Clouds are generally co-located with regions that CALIPSO sees clouds.
Note cloud observations are from Terra and are miss matched in time by
7 hours.
Dust over Saudi Arabia is not reported by MODIS These images were produced by Kurt Severance of NASA's Langley Research Center using the new texturing capabilities of EnSight 8.2.
